All Hallows’ Eve

happyhalloween

So it wasn’t quite Halloween, but the day before we took our selection of spooky treats to Andover Market. Here at Martha’s Tea Party we pretty much look for any excuse to dress up, be it an event like halloween or just every Thursday in a spotty dress – because, why not?

The people of Andover need to eat more cake

We had been all over picking up decorations for our Citroen H Van. We went pumpkin picking at Bourne Valley PYO, we got some amazing decorations in ASDA (seriously impressed) and there were some things we’ve just had knocking about since time began.

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to carve our pumpkin, so thank goodness for Sharpie!

We had a selection of ghoulish cakes on offer ready for our Halloween Spooktacular…

Blood Red Velvet Brownies (Gluten Free)
Ghoulish Jam Filled Vanilla Cupcakes
Spooky Vanilla Cupcakes
Creepy Chocolate Cupcakes
Franken-Rocky Road

We also had our Peanut Butter Cup Brownies, because if we didn’t there would be a lot of unhappy customers!

So our van was looking great, we had some spooky sounding cakes on the menu, but what good is spooky sounding cakes if they don’t look the part?

Some of you may spot that we even had some classic Point Horror on the go that week too, we take Halloween VERY seriously.

Unfortunately, we have a bit of an early start on a Thursday so didn’t have time to get dressed up ourselves, but some people may have taken amusement in the amount of selfie’s taken during the day when the head gear for our Halloween party attire turned up from the amazing Rosadior. One floral headband worn two ways…

bydaybynightIt may have been too spooky for some if we looked like the latter during the day.

Having said that we love dressing up, we are not planning on shoving Christmas down your throat quite yet, we’ll give you a few more weeks before we start wearing antlers to the market and selling mince pies. We’ll leave that to the big coffee chains for now.

Remember if you are after any cakes in particular, feel free to drop us a message on Facebook or via our Contact page, we hate to see disappointed faces when we have sold out!

Sparsholt Food Festival

When we had a last minute opportunity to get on board with the Taste of Hampshire Food Festival at Sparsholt College we leapt at it! Sparsholt Food Festival Two days of solid baking during some of the hottest temperatures of the year so far made for some sweltering heat in the kitchen (31.4 degrees!). Tray bakes and layer cakes were on the cards for Thursday. It’s been a while since we made Peanut Butter Goo Bar – and it’s still as dangerous to have in the kitchen as it always has been. Peanut Butter Goo Bar Lurking beneath this innocent (ish) crumbly topping is the most gooey, sweet, peanut substance known to man. It really will change your life. We promise.

It was certainly a relief when at 5pm on the Friday afternoon when the final batch of cupcakes was done that we could finally turn the ovens off. Then it was just a case of waiting until the sun had gone down and it had cooled off so we could start making the buttercream. The final Smarties were added to the Chocolate Nostalgia cake about midnight and with the van packed we set our alarm for 5.30am and hit the sack.

Saturday morning arrived, it was drizzly but the forecast looked promising. We set off about 7:40am, the engine started on the first go and we slowly set off into the road. By the time the momentum of the inclined driveway had worn off, it was suddenly apparent that no amount of revving was making the van move. It was a heavy hearted moment when we realised that we would not be taking our van to the event. However, there wasn’t much time to dwell on it with an hour to get to there and set up and before any of that could begin the issue of what to do with a 3 tonne vehicle blocking both lanes of a road pre-8am. Thankfully, there were a few people out of bed and in their cars trying to leave the village, so a few kind souls offered to help push. With some expert steering, lots of shouting and A LOT of pushing the van was back up the slope onto the driveway. Then it was time to unpack the fridge/freezer to get them plugged back into the mains and the challenge of how to cram two chairs, two tables, a crate of vintage cake stands and a shed load of cake into the back of a Peugeot 206. Before we set off, there was time to have a quick look under the van. This is what greeted us… Detached Drive Shaft The drive shaft had become detached from the wheel. It looks a bit daunting, but hopefully its just a case of replacing the bolts…only time will tell.

We made it to Sparsholt College in good time to set up the gazebo. Once it was up, the tables were unloaded and it was time to set up all the cakes onto the cake stands. Martha's Tea Party On offer we had:

Individual Cakes:
* Chocolate Flake Cupcakes
* Vanilla Cupcakes
* Red Velvet Cupcakes
* Carrot Cake Cupcakes
* English Madelines

Tray Bakes:
* Mega Mint Chocolate Brownies
* Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies
* Rocky Road
* Peanut Butter Goo Bar

Layer Cakes:
* Chocolate Nostalgia Cake
* Victoria Sponge

Doors opened at 10am, and there was a steady flow of people through. Many people resisted the cakey temptations on offer because it was “too early”. We’d be lying if we said this response didn’t alarm us. It is NEVER “too early” for cake. Never.

Anyway, by early afternoon there was a buzz around the stall – and some people even coming back for seconds!

It was lovely to speak to the wonderful folk enjoying the sunshine and the other suppliers. Special mention has to go to one of our own suppliers Purbeck Ice Cream who we ended up set up next to. Also Spade and Spoon, Chillicious (in a shiny Citroen H Van) and Upham Brewery. Victoria Sponge Rocky Road Mountain

The crowds had started to head home by about 4.30, so we started packing up to head on home for a well deserved slice of leftover Chocolate Nostalgia Cake with a glass of milk.Lemon Drizzle Cupcakes

Final Thanks has to go to Sparsholt College for thinking of us last minute, we hope to be back up for an event soon, hopefully in our van next time!

Work in Progress

Since our last post, spring has officially sprung, the days have got longer and for us they have rolled continuously into one another. We’ve practically been living in marigolds, and have got through enough paper towels and disinfectant to last us a lifetime! But we are pleased to report, that our beloved Citroen H Van is now so clean that you could eat your cake off the floor. It’s been hard work just getting her to this standard and there’s still a little way to go, but the end is at least in sight.

Achievements unlocked have included:

* Dismantling a variety of machinery for cleaning and successfully putting
  it back together (high five)
* Navigating websites in french to source replacement parts for the van
* Knots - who knew there was an art to securing a tarpaulin!

With all the focus being on getting the van ready, there hasn’t been much in the way of baking. However, there have been Alan Partridge Cupcakes for a party with the same theme…

And a mega-mix of cupcakes for AFS Crossfit

Workout hard, eat cake… right? There was so much going on in this box. We had Vanilla Sponge with Vanilla Buttercream topped with a Fondant Star, Vanilla Sponge filled with Raspberry Jam topped with Vanilla Buttercream and a Glace Cherry, Chocolate Sponge topped with Vanilla Buttercream, Raspberry Jam and a Flake and last but no means least Chocolate Sponge topped with Chocolate Buttercream and a Flake. Did you get all that, or did we lose you at the picture?

We’ve had so many requests for more pictures of the van, especially the interior – so we promise to dedicate a post to that very soon.

Until then…

Valentines Day Cake Massacre

Valentines Day came and went, but not before much cake was baked and consumed. We were lucky enough to be a part of a few celebrations. China was boxed up and shipped out, along with some delicious bakes.

Be My Valentine bunting

On the menu was..

Mini Chocolate Cupcakes
Glazed Lemon Brownies
English Madelines
Mini Marmalade Sponges
Mini Cucumber Rolls

Some of our clients opted for a traditional offering in their teapots, whilst others got inventive and put cocktails in them instead.

Tea Cup Cocktail

Most of our teapots hold at least 6 teacups, so with a cocktail inside they are sure to get the party started.

We also got a little creative this Valentines Day and knocked up this Tassel Garland to add a little sparkle to one tea party.

Pink Tassel Garland

Whether you are into celebrating Valentines Day or not, we think it’s a great excuse for cake.

What did you do this Valentines Day?

Ten Tiny Fingers, Ten Tiny Toes

This weekend was Caroline’s Baby Shower. The brief was simple; 10 girls looking for a delicious afternoon tea.

On the menu was:

12 Mini Vanilla Cupcakes
12 Mini Chocolate Cupcakes
10 Lemon Fondant Fancies
10 Plain Scones

The ovens were fired up on Friday afternoon to get all the goodies baked.

First up was the cupcakes. We split the batter and made 50:50 chocolate and vanilla.

photo 2

Decorated with an assortment of sprinkles but focussed on pink as the mother-to-be is expecting a baby girl.

We got the pink fondant out and added some little pink footprints, and finished off the whole batch with a sprinkling of edible glitter. Because there is no such thing as too much glitter.

Next came the Lemon Fondant Fancies. These are new to the menu here at Martha’s Tea Party (we’d recommend trying the version with Lavender too). They are tricky cakes to cover, you would never believe the amount of Fondant Icing Sugar required! But that didn’t stop us covering the sponges with lashings of lemon yellow goodness.

We sent off the cakes boxed up with 10 scones (which we forgot to photograph) and two crates of Vintage China ready for an afternoon of tea, cake and girly gossip.

We hope a good time was had by all!
